Basti Therapy in Dubai

Ayurvedic medicated enema therapy for Vata, in Jumeirah 1

Basti (also spelled Vasti) is the Ayurvedic therapy in which warm medicated oil or a herbal decoction is given as an enema. It is one of the five Panchakarma therapies and is considered the principal Ayurvedic treatment for Vata, traditionally used for constipation, bloating, lower back and joint stiffness, and dryness. At RamaCare Polyclinic in Jumeirah 1, Dubai, every patient first sees Dr. Shamna Keloth Meethal (BAMS). Basti is then given privately by a Kerala-trained therapist of your own gender, in sessions of 60–90 minutes including preparation.

Treatment Overview

What Is Basti Therapy?

Understanding Ayurvedic Basti Therapy

Basti is one of the five classical Panchakarma therapies; see our Panchakarma treatment in Dubai for full 7, 14 and 21-day programmes. Basti is a traditional Ayurvedic cleansing therapy that involves the administration of herbal oils or medicated decoctions to support colon cleansing, detoxification, and Vata balance. In Ayurveda, the colon is considered one of the primary locations of Vata dosha, which influences movement, circulation, digestion, nervous system activity, and joint function. When Vata becomes imbalanced due to stress, poor diet, dehydration, irregular routines, or toxin accumulation, it may contribute to digestive discomfort, dryness, fatigue, stiffness, anxiety, and low vitality.

Ayurvedic detox therapies such as Basti aim to restore internal balance naturally while supporting healthy digestion and improved wellness. Unlike temporary detox methods that focus only on short-term cleansing, Ayurvedic Basti Treatment works holistically by improving digestive efficiency, supporting tissue nourishment, and helping the body eliminate toxins naturally.

At RamaCare Polyclinic, every Panchakarma detox program is customized according to the patient’s body constitution (Prakriti), lifestyle, symptoms, digestive condition, and wellness goals.

Who Can Benefit from Basti Therapy?

This Ayurvedic detox treatment may be recommended for individuals experiencing:

  • •Chronic constipation or poor digestion

How Ayurvedic Basti Treatment Works

The selected herbal formulations are then administered according to the patient’s condition and Ayurvedic assessment.

Why People Choose Basti

Basti is usually recommended for Vata-related problems: long-standing constipation and bloating, lower back and joint stiffness, dryness, and some nerve-related and menstrual complaints. In Ayurveda, the colon is the main seat of Vata, which is why Basti is given there.

Constipation and Bloating

Long-standing constipation, gas and bloating are classic Vata complaints in Ayurveda and among the commonest reasons for Basti.

Common

Lower Back and Joint Stiffness

Stiffness and dryness in the back and joints are linked to Vata; Basti is the classical internal therapy, often combined with Kati or Janu Basti outside.

Common

Dryness and Vata Imbalance

Dry skin, light sleep and restlessness, aggravated by air-conditioning and irregular routines.

02

Basti Courses: Yoga, Kala and Karma Basti

Classical Ayurveda describes Basti courses by their length. Oil and decoction Bastis are alternated, starting and ending with oil. Dr. Shamna decides the course for you.

Yoga BastiAbout 8 Bastis; a shorter course, often within a Panchakarma programme.
Kala BastiAbout 15–16 Bastis; a medium course for long-standing Vata problems.
Karma BastiAbout 30 Bastis; the longest classical course, for chronic conditions.
Matra BastiSmall daily oil Bastis that can be given on their own, for gentle Vata care.
Basti is one of the five Panchakarma therapies. See Panchakarma treatment in Dubai for full 7, 14 and 21-day programmes.

What Happens During a Basti Session

1

Consultation: your first visit is with Dr. Shamna, who checks that Basti is suitable and chooses the type.

2

Preparation: a warm oil massage and gentle steam on the abdomen, back and legs.

3

The Basti: you lie on your left side; your therapist, always of your own gender, gently gives the warm medicated oil or decoction through a soft, lubricated nozzle. This takes a few minutes and is done in a private room.

4

Resting: you rest for a while; a decoction Basti is usually released within about 45 minutes, while an oil Basti may be held longer.

5

After: you use the private bathroom, rest briefly and follow the diet advice. The whole visit takes 60–90 minutes.

Before Niruha (decoction) Basti, eat nothing heavy; before Anuvasana (oil) Basti, a light meal is usually advised. Your therapist will tell you what to do for each session.

Basti vs Kati Basti, Janu Basti and Greeva Basti

The names are similar, but these are different therapies. RamaCare offers all of them.

Basti (Vasti)An internal therapy: medicated oil or decoction given as an enema. Used for Vata conditions such as constipation, bloating and stiffness.
Kati BastiAn external therapy: warm medicated oil held over the lower back inside a ring of dough. Used for lower back stiffness.
Janu BastiThe same external method over the knee, for knee stiffness.
Greeva BastiThe same external method over the neck, for neck stiffness.
For Kati, Janu and Greeva Basti, see Kerala Ayurvedic massage. The doctor may combine internal Basti with an external one.

Who Should Not Have Basti (or Should Wait)?

Dr. Shamna checks your health first. Basti may be postponed or unsuitable if you have:

diarrhoea, an acute stomach infection or vomiting
rectal bleeding, or painful piles, fissure or fistula
pregnancy
recent abdominal or rectal surgery
a flare of inflammatory bowel disease
severe heart or kidney disease, or are very weak
