Understanding Ayurvedic Digestive Treatment

What Is Ayurvedic Treatment for Digestive Problems?

Common Digestive Problems in Dubai

Acidity, bloating, IBS and constipation are common in Dubai, often linked to late meals, eating out, spicy and fried food, cold drinks, stress and the summer heat. Ayurveda traces most digestive problems to weak digestive fire (Agni) and the build-up of Ama.

Late and Heavy Dinners

Eating late, large meals, especially after long working days, is one of the commonest triggers of acidity and bloating.

Common

Spicy, Fried and Sour Food

Ayurveda links them to aggravated Pitta, felt as burning, acidity and loose stools.

Common

Iced Drinks and Air-Conditioning

Cold drinks with meals are believed in Ayurveda to dampen digestive fire (Agni), leading to heaviness and gas.

Common

Stress and Irregular Routines

Stress, irregular meals and poor sleep are strongly linked to IBS and acidity flare-ups.

Common

Coffee, Energy Drinks and Alcohol

Common in office life, and frequent triggers of heartburn and reflux.

Common

Weak Agni and Ama

In Ayurveda, weak digestive fire leaves undigested residue (Ama), felt as a coated tongue, heaviness and tiredness.

When to See a Doctor First

Some digestive symptoms need a medical check before any Ayurvedic treatment. At RamaCare, our general physician is in the same building. See a doctor first if you have:

unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
blood in the stool, black stools, or vomiting blood
difficulty or pain when swallowing
severe, constant or night-time abdominal pain
a new change in bowel habit lasting several weeks, especially over the age of 50
fever, persistent vomiting, or signs of anaemia such as unusual tiredness
See our GP page for gastrointestinal disorders. Ayurvedic care can then be added alongside your medical treatment.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Common Digestive Problems

Acidity, heartburn and GERD (Amlapitta)Linked to aggravated Pitta. Ayurvedic treatment for acidity may include Avipattikar, Takradhara, a Pitta-calming diet and earlier, lighter dinners.
IBS (Grahani)Linked to weak Agni and Vata. Ayurvedic treatment for IBS may include digestive herbs, Takra (medicated buttermilk), regular warm meals, stress support and, when suitable, Basti.
Constipation (Vibandha)Linked to Vata. Ayurvedic treatment for constipation may include Triphala as prescribed, fluids, ghee, fibre and, for some patients, Virechana or Basti.
Gas and bloating (Anaha / Adhmana)Linked to Vata and weak Agni. Ayurvedic treatment for gas and bloating may include Hingvastak, ginger and cumin, warm cooked food and avoiding cold drinks with meals.
Indigestion (Ajirna)Heaviness after meals. Care may include digestive spices, smaller meals, the main meal at midday and Dhanyamla Dhara for some patients.
GastritisBurning or pain in the upper stomach. Our GP checks for causes such as H. pylori; Ayurvedic Pitta-calming care can be added alongside.
Each plan depends on your assessment. New to Ayurveda? Start with our Ayurvedic gut health guide and Agni self-check.

Ayurvedic Therapies and Herbal Medicines for Digestion

Takradhara and Takra therapyMedicated buttermilk poured over the forehead (Takradhara) or taken as part of the diet; traditionally used for Pitta, heat and stress-related digestive problems.
Dhanyamla DharaA warm stream of fermented herbal liquid over the body; traditionally used for heaviness, sluggish digestion and Vata-Kapha conditions.
VirechanaSupervised therapeutic purgation, one of the Panchakarma therapies; traditionally used for Pitta-related digestive problems.
BastiMedicated enema therapy, the classical Panchakarma therapy for Vata conditions such as IBS with constipation and bloating. See Basti therapy in Dubai.
TriphalaA classical three-fruit formula traditionally used for regular bowels; taken only as prescribed.
Avipattikar churnaA classical formula traditionally used for acidity and heartburn (Pitta).
Hingvastak churnaA classical formula with asafoetida, traditionally used for gas, bloating and poor appetite.
Herbal medicines are prescribed by Dr. Shamna after your assessment, not sold as standard packages. Tell the doctor about any other medicines you take. Read more: Panchakarma · Basti therapy in Dubai.

Why Acidity and Bloating Get Worse in Dubai, and What Helps

Summer heat (May–October): Pitta rises, so acidity and loose stools increase. Favour cooling foods, coconut water and buttermilk, limit spicy, fried and sour food, and follow our Ayurvedic summer diet for Dubai.
Late dinners and eating out: keep the main meal at midday, eat dinner at least two to three hours before bed, and choose dal, rice, soups and grilled vegetables.
Iced drinks and air-conditioning: sip room-temperature water or cumin-coriander-fennel tea with meals instead of iced drinks.
Ramadan: break the fast gently with dates and water, then soup; avoid heavy fried food at iftar to prevent acidity at night.
Office stress: eat away from your desk, at regular times; stress is one of the strongest IBS triggers.

Foods to Avoid with Acidity, IBS and Bloating

Acidity: very spicy, sour, fried and fermented food, coffee, energy drinks, alcohol, and lying down soon after meals.
IBS: your personal triggers, often large raw salads, very rich or fried food, excess coffee, and irregular meals; keep a simple food diary.
Bloating: cold drinks with meals, fizzy drinks, eating fast, and heavy, late dinners.
Constipation: too little water, very dry or processed snacks, and skipping meals.
